40 Days of Prayer

Dear North Hills Family,

The number 40 is a significant number in the Bible to signify a time of preparation. The rain fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights while Noah and his family were kept safe in the ark. The nation of Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before being able to go into the land of Canaan. Even Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by the devil before beginning his earthly ministry.

If you were at our Worship Service on Sunday, July 3, you heard me share about an event called “40 Days of Prayer.” If you were not there or you were unable to watch the service, please watch this video to get a better idea of our prayer time: https://youtu.be/wsiVFDrwvJY

From July 6 to August 14, we invite you to spend time each day in prayerful preparation for what God is going to do through North Hills this coming school year. Each day, there will be a prayer focus on what to pray for. Please set aside time at 12:00 p.m. each day to pray with the North Hills family. Your prayer can be as long or as short as you want, but we hope you will join us as we pray for God’s blessing on North Hills this coming year.

Our 40 Days of Prayer will finish up on Sunday, August 14, with a prayer walk on the North Hills campus. More details on the prayer walk will come as we approach the date. This 40 Days of Prayer will also serve to launch our 2022-2023 ministry year theme of, "Intimate Conversations with God." As we begin this ministry year, let's set the goal of spending more time together with God in prayer. May God draw us closer to Himself and to each other during this time.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

In Christ,

Pastor James Watson

Congregational Pastor

North Hills Church

Day 40 - The First Day of School

2 Corinthians 517: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (ESV)

August 15 is the first day of school. We are excited for the many people who will come to our campus. For some, they are returning to North Hills for another year. For others, this will be their first time. Pray that our students will have peace and rest as they think about starting school. May this be an exciting year at North Hills as we love and teach our students to prepare them for a scholastic future as well as a Bible-based understanding of basic life principles. Pray that students, teachers, and parents' nerves are calmed as we anticipate and transition into the new school year.

Day 39 - Fall Retreat

Ephesians 2:19-20: "But you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone." (ESV)

From September 13-16 all of our 6th-12th Grade will head to our annual Fall Retreat. We want to begin every single school year with an intentional time focused on the word of God and a challenge to students to embrace a life founded in Jesus. Please pray for the planning team as they finalize plans for this year’s Fall Retreat. Please pray that student hearts would be open and ready to hear the truth of Jesus. Please pray for our camp speaker (John Michael Hinton) who will travel to California from another state. Pray that our students become better worshippers not just on Sunday and Wednesday (in Chapel), but every single day.

Day 38 - The Accreditation Process

2 Corinthians 8:21: "For we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man." (ESV)

North Hills Christian School is always in the process of renewing accreditations through the Association of Christians School International (ACSI) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Accreditation is an ongoing process that is vitally important to our ability to educate our students for years to come. As the Senior Executive Pastor, Pastor Daniel Barrett leads North Hills to evaluate our School from every angle to ensure we match up against each accrediting agency’s rigorous standards. We are currently four years through a 6-year accreditation which means that North Hills is up for accreditation renewal in 2024. Therefore the process for renewing our accreditation will begin this year. Please pray that North Hills is diligent to maintain the highest academic standards to ensure that we continue to keep these vital accreditations for years to come.

Day 37 - A Good word going out into the community

James 3:12: "Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water." (ESV)

A good word comes from a good heart and the same is true with a negative word – it comes from a negative heart. Salt water and fresh water cannot come from the same well. A good word and a bad word cannot come from a heart that continually seeks to serve God. What we say about others will come back to build us up or put us down. We should guard our words and continually look to build up others. North Hills has been a positive influence in this community since the mid-1970s. People know North Hills because we work to do good by supporting the community, loving people as we love God, serving those around us, and making a difference in our world for Christ. Pray that God will amplify the good words that are spoken about North Hills and silence those who have a critical spirit. Pray that God will give you opportunities to say a great word about a great place to come to for education and worship.

Day 36 - Professions of Faith from Students and Parents

Romans 10:13: "For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'” (ESV)

Beginning a new relationship with Jesus Christ through salvation is the greatest thing that can happen to anyone! This is the core of what we preach, teach, live, and breathe. It is at the center of what we believe as a church, and it is the most important thing we teach in our school. We expect all of our teachers to be saved by Jesus’ sacrifice and transformed into new creations. Therefore we expect them to be able to lead students into a relationship with Jesus. For all this to happen, the Holy Spirit of God moves and works in people’s lives to draw them to Him. Pray that this will happen every day at North Hills. Pray that the Spirit will call people and people will respond and say YES!

Day 35 - Unity

John 17:22-23: “The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me." (ESV)

One of the greatest dangers for an organization like North Hills is disunity. When we look at the complexities of leading a church, a K-12 school, and a preschool, one might assume that disunity is not only a possibility but an inevitability. However, unity is not something to be pursued as much as it is to be protected. We are united not just because we share the same campus and some of the same staff. We’re not even united because we have the same Mission, Values, and Vision (though that helps). We are united because we worship the same God and unapologetically seek to honor Him above all else. We are united around God’s word as the only standard by which we will live our lives. And we are united around our primary goal of leading as many people as possible to put their faith in Jesus. Pray that we protect our unity as we cling to God and His word. And pray that we invite and accept others into God’s amazing unified family.

Day 34 - Towards a Christian Worldview

James 4:4: "Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (ESV)

The world around us is becoming more and more secular and in many cases, anti-christian. From politics to entertainment and especially what is taught in schools, Christians are more and more faced with beliefs that go against our deepest held values. Christian parents struggle with the desire for their children to get a good education but also protect them from those ideas and teaching that are distinctly anti-Christian. At North Hills, we want to provide students with an educational foundation that is integrated with a Christian worldview. This not only applies to sciences, but it also applies to life experiences like leadership, business skills, understanding of world cultures, languages, sports, and arts as well. At North Hills, we put our faith into every part of our education. Students get an education plus a lifestyle of good decision-making. Grades are important, but the most important thing we can do for our students is to point them to Jesus. Of course, it is vital that parents take the lead in the education of their children, especially in the area of faith. Pray that parents and guardians will understand how important this is and that they will visit us for more information about the importance of Christian education.

Day 33 - Fusion Student Ministry

Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (ESV)

At North Hills we don’t see our students as the church of tomorrow; we see them as the church of today. For this reason, we think of our Fusion Students (6th-12th grade) as a priority. At North Hills, it’s not just students who attend North Hills church that we think of when we talk about our Student Ministry. Rather we think of all those in 6th-12th grade at North Hill Christian School as part of our Student Ministry as well. Let’s pray for Mark Banda as he takes on the role of the Student Life Director helping to disciple all of our youth group-age students. Let’s pray for our Fusion Leadership Team who work with Mark to lead our Fusion Student Ministry. And let’s pray that students would choose to participate in all that our Fusion Student Ministry has to offer.

Day 32 - Facility, Repair, and Maintenance Needs

Psalm 127:1: "Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." (ESV)

The campus of North Hills is big and complex and requires a lot of daily maintenance. Under constant use, our facilities must be regularly repaired and maintained. Sometimes, these repairs can be done by our staff. Other times they must be contracted out. Sometimes, they must be repaired immediately. Other times, the repairs can be put off. Pray that North Hills would be good stewards of the property and facilities that God has blessed us with. Pray that our facilities would continue to serve us under the constant use of our students and families that come on campus every day.

Day 31 - Staffing Needs

Luke 10:2: "And he said to them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'" (ESV)

North Hills requires a lot of people to be effective and efficient in providing for the educational needs of our students. While we have made great strides in hiring people to fill positions, we still have positions that we are praying God will provide people for. Please pray that God would bring the right people to North Hills who have a strong desire to serve God in this place. Pray for creativity on the part of our administration in filling these essential positions. Pray that North Hills would be a work environment that people want to be a part of.

Day 30 - The PTF and Parent Volunteers

Deuteronomy 6:6-9: "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." (ESV)

Parents play an incredibly important role in the life of their children. Parents also play an incredibly important role in the life of North Hills. From chaperones for field trips, class assistants, volunteers during fundraisers, and of course the Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF), parents help North Hills be as great as it can be. We are grateful first that parents entrust us with their children. But we are also grateful for parents who are fully invested in North Hills. Pray for good relationships between parents and teachers. Pray also that parents would be impacted through our School and for those parents who have not yet embraced the love of Jesus, may this year be the year, they make that profession of faith.

Day 29 - Returning Teachers

Matthew 11:28: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (ESV)

Teachers know the subjects they enjoy teaching. And they usually know what age group they like to teach the best. Some of our returning teachers will be teaching the same grade or subject as last year. Others will be teaching a new grade or subject. Pray that our teachers return rested and rejuvenated and ready for another great year. Pray that they have an abundance of patience and love to go around for this year. Pray that they are attentive to the spiritual needs of themselves as well as their students. Let us pray that our returning teachers feel supported with encouragement and accountability throughout the year.

Day 28 – The New NHCS Administration

Romans 12:6-8: "Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…the one who leads, with zeal." (ESV)

North Hills K-12 School will begin the year with nearly an entirely new administrative structure. Pastor Daniel Barrett, in his role as the Senior Executive Pastor, will function as the K-12 Superintendent as a part of his overall duties and responsibilities. John Dwyer (a former NHCS teacher) has been hired as the Principal, Amy Muscato (A beloved 1st Grade Teacher at North Hills) has been hired as the Vice Principal and Cathye Pollard will be the School Counselor on a full-time basis. While all have been functioning in these roles this summer, a new school year will be challenging to establish this new normal. Please pray for each of our administrative staff as they continue to function in the role they have been called to. Pray for good communication and goodwill among all of our amazing staff.

Day 27 - New Teachers

Zechariah 4:10: "For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice." (ESV)

Today is the day that new and first-year teachers report for duty. The first day of a new job can be filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation. At North Hills, we are grateful for our new teachers and pray that God would bless them and give them the strength to carry them through the school year. Ultimately, their success is our success and our hope and prayer are that those first-year teachers will become second-year teachers. Let’s pray for good communication to start the years as well as support, encouragement, and accountability for all of our teachers throughout the year.

Day 26 - The Gateway Advance Program

Colossians 1:10: "So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God." (ESV)

North Hills has long been an institution dedicated to educating the next generation. Recently we have begun to offer post-high school education as well. ADVANCE (through Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention) exists to equip lay leaders who expand God’s kingdom. ADVANCE centers all over North America and in a few international locations provide classes at a post-high school level to train effective Christian leaders for the churches of many people groups. North Hills partners with the Redwood Empire Baptist Association to serve as an ADVANCE center offering basic courses in Theology, New Testament, Old Testament, and Church history. Pray for David Quitevis as he teaches classes. Pray for students to enroll who are interested in growing in their knowledge of God’s Word and their desire to become better servants in the Church.

Day 25 - Our Athletic Program

Hebrews 12:1: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." (ESV)

Many Middle and High School students participate in competitive sports teams throughout the year at North Hills. North Hills will not only play Christian schools but also non-Christian schools. Pray that our students, coaches, and fans represent the love of Christ wherever we go. Pray for coaches to coach teams. Pray for students who are still deciding whether to play. Pray for the scheduling of games. Pray for safety in travel and on the court for our athletes.

Day 24 – Technology

Proverbs 16:9 "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps." (ESV)

North Hills is a large complex organization that relies daily on technology to achieve the mission we’ve been called to in Vallejo and beyond. From the 100+ computers that we use on campus for staff and students to the email and web programs we use to communicate with staff, students, and their families to Audio/Visual and Livestreaming equipment. One small hiccup in our technology needs can cause significant stress on our organization. There is also the threat that technology could be used against us. Please pray that we would use technology in a way that brings glory to God. Pray that God would protect our technology so we can effectively reach and teach our students. Pray also that we wouldn’t become so dependent on technology that falls apart when the technology fails.

Day 23 – Administrative and Support Staff

Ecclesiastes 4:9: "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil." (ESV)

It’s sometimes difficult to put into words all that goes on around North Hills throughout the year. If we’re not careful, we may forget about those who serve in the background. The success of North Hills depends largely on the support of those behind the scenes. North Hills depends on our administrative assistants, business office staff, teacher’s aids, lunch aids, car pick-up drop off and others as well. Let’s pray that they are appreciated and continue to do their work with joy as they see how important they really are to North Hills.

Day 22 - Campus safety and security

Psalm 118:6: "The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" (ESV)

“Leaning on the everlasting arms, safe and secure from all alarms . . .” This is our desire for everyone who walks onto the campus at North Hills. With memories of the tragedies at schools around the country always fresh in our minds, we know that it is important to do all we can to protect our students and staff from people who spin out of control. North Hills takes campus security seriously and regularly evaluates and drills on how to keep our campus and students safe. We are ensuring that our safety protocols are working and in place and we want you to pray that God will continue to watch over us and keep us safe and secure in Him!

Day 21 – Maintenance and Grounds

Psalm 73:13: "I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence." (ESV)

They say cleanliness is next to godliness. While this saying is not in the Bible, it certainly is an implied teaching of the scripture. Having clean hands and a pure heart are clear figurative expectations of God’s people. While this quotation applies more to spiritual truth, it is also a known fact that clean facilities and a sculptured landscape say a lot about the people who work and serve at North Hills. We want to pray for Richard, Ed, and Ian who work hard to keep our campus clean and safe for our students. Additionally, this past year we’ve started a student worker program where juniors and seniors get paid to work in a variety of roles on campus including maintenance and janitorial staff. Pray that their love for the students and their love for the Lord will continue to inspire them to keep our campus beautiful and safe.

Day 20 - Student Care Team, Extended Care, and the After School Program

1 Corinthians 10:31: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (ESV)

The Student Care Team is dedicated to caring for students before school, after school, during lunch, during recess, and during the summer. This is another opportunity for North Hills to have a lasting impact on these young lives and families beyond the classroom. We continue to evaluate and change to meet the needs of working families while offering excellent care, nurture, and experiences for the students. Pray that we offer the best experience for the students in every step they take on this campus. Pray for our staff as they care for our students. And pray for families as they determine the best way to meet their care needs throughout the year.

Day 19 - Awana

2 Timothy 2:15: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth." (ESV)

Awana is a fun and challenging club that meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8 PM during the school year. In Awana, children memorize Scripture, learn about the people and events of the Bible, develop character skills, enjoy game time, and regularly receive the gospel of Jesus Christ. This year, Awana is poised for great growth. Pray that God would provide more leaders to serve in this vital ministry. Pray that God would refresh and recharge those who have dedicated years to this ministry. And pray that God would bring children who are ready to learn and grow in their faith. Perhaps God will even lead some of these kids to put their faith in Jesus for the first time.

Day 18 - K-12 Teachers

John 17:17: "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth." (ESV)

School teachers need a good summer’s rest as they prepare to return to the classroom in the fall. The emotional energy required to teach can be physically and spiritually draining. We pray that this summer they have recharged their batteries to last a good 10 months! Pray that they are rested and ready to expend their love and care for the students. Pray that they will have supernatural energy each day to keep up with their students in a calm and non-reactive manner. Pray that the Holy Spirit will ooze out of them in ways that are evident in their attitudes, words, and actions. Our teachers are our heroes who stand in the gap between the world and our student body. Pray for a hedge of spiritual protection around them. Pray they will be more encouraged than ever as they count down the days to their return.

Day 17 - Preschool Teachers and Aids

Leviticus 10:11: "You are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the LORD has spoken to them by Moses." (ESV)

It is our desire to find the most loving and caring adults we can to teach and care for our pre-school children. Every moment these children are on our campus we pray that our teachers and aids will be looking for ways to comfort, teach, care for, and encourage them in ways that will not only prepare them for learning but will introduce them to Jesus Christ. We love to integrate teaching about Jesus into all of our activities at the preschool level. Pray that our teachers and aides constantly practice and pass on this simple truth.

Day 16 - K-12 Admin Council

1 Peter 3:8: "Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind." (ESV)

The K-12 Admin Council team meets weekly to manage and lead the North Hills Christian School. Their unique gifts, talents, certifications, and life experience ensure that we have the best minds in our organization working to provide the best overall educational experience for our students. They often work extra hours at school and at home to get the job done. Pray that the Holy Spirit will unite them in mind and spirit to bring new insight into the inner workings of the school. Pray for good communication between them and pray that the entire school staff will join them in the implementation of the plans for this upcoming 2022-2023 school year. (Members of the K-12 Admin Council: Mark Banda, Pastor Daniel Barrett, John Dwyer, Amy Muscato, and Cathye Pollard)

Day 15 - Management Team

1 Peter 4:10 "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace." (ESV)

The Management Team leads the day-to-day operations of the North Hills organization. In the complex organizational structure of North Hills, it is imperative that everyone is working together to promote and achieve the mission, vision, and values of North Hills. Pray that the Holy Spirit will unite them in mind and spirit to wisely lead North Hills. Pray for good communication between each of them and that their own focus would be on Jesus. (Members of the Management Team: Pastor Daniel Barrett, Kelly DeSilva, John Dwyer, Lu Parinas, and Pastor James Watson)

Day 14 - School Board

1 Thessalonians 5:12 - "We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you." (ESV)

Our School Board is elected by the church to give guidance and oversight to the School and Preschool. They have a challenging job! They receive information from the management team and in return are responsible for making tough decisions that make our school great. Pray for these incredible people who meet once a month to help guide the direction of North Hills K-12 and Preschool). Pray that they will be empowered by the Holy Spirit in the decision-making process. The current School Board members are Alex Bingtan (chair), Maria Leonard, Richard Flood, Albert Frevele, Kasama Lee, and Tim Rutledge.

Day 13 - New Families Moving Into the Area

Hebrews 13:2 - "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." (ESV)

Vallejo is one of the fastest-changing cities in all of California (maybe even the US). Young families are choosing to move to Vallejo in order to be close to jobs around the Bay area. Moving is hard on parents as they change jobs, houses, and find new schools for their children. Moving is also hard on children who in most cases, probably didn’t choose to move. They leave their old friends and have to start over in a new city. School is a natural place to find new friends and a Christian school is a great place to make Christian friends. Pray that families who are moving to the Vallejo area over the summer will consider North Hills School and Church as the right place to educate their children and to worship Jesus! Pray that they will visit us, feel the Holy Spirit leading to join us, and know we will care for and love their kids.

Day 12 - College and Career

Numbers 13:30: “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” (ESV)

In the days of Moses, when his generation was older, God was planning a transition in leadership from the older generation to the younger generation. For many years, through Moses, God was preparing Joshua to step up and lead his people into the Promised Land. The promised land was filled with dangerous people (even giants!) and pitfalls that might draw them away from God. God wanted a younger generation that was fully devoted to him and not afraid of the giants in the land. At North Hills, we pray for our own “Joshua Generation;” those 18–35-year-olds who are being prepared by God to stand firm for Him in a troublesome world. Unfortunately, surveys consistently tell us that this generation is becoming more and more unchristian. Only around 12% represent a consistent, biblical worldview. But never underestimate what Jesus can do with 12 people fully devoted to Him. Let us pray today that this “Joshua Generation” will be strengthened in their resolve to follow Jesus no matter the cost. May they be comforted in any trials they face. And through the power of the Holy Spirit, may they truly change the world for Christ.

Day 11 - Public Schools in Vallejo and the Surrounding Community

1 Timothy 2:1: "First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people." (ESV)

The public school system has experienced great trouble over the last few years. While we often emphasize the need to pray for North Hills, we also recognize the many students, teachers, and administrators who attend the public school system also need our prayers. Let us pray for the Christian students, teachers, and administrators who will be able to shine the light of Jesus on a hurting world. Pray for a great year. Additionally, let’s pray for those families considering the jump from public school to private Christian education.

Day 10 - Undecided Students

Acts 2:42: "And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." (ESV)

Choosing where to enroll your children in school is a big decision. And these days, there are many options. And sometimes families have to make the decision of whether or not to come back to North Hills. For example, we have several students from last year who have not registered for this next school year. Others are in process but haven’t finished the enrollment packets. Indecision can be for a variety of reasons. North Hills has experienced a lot of positive change over the last few years. This coming year is poised to be a great one. We pray that these undecided students would decide to be a part of the exciting things going on at North Hills.

Day 9 - International students

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (ESV)

North Hills Christian School is internationally known as a top-notch educational institution. Each year students from around the world are sent to be educated at North Hills. That’s not to mention the many international students who are brought here for their parents' jobs. In many cases, these students have no Christian background. We certainly want to give them a great education, but we also want to invite them to a relationship with Jesus. Let’s pray for these international students - of all ages - who will add cultural diversity to our North Hills family. We also want to pray that North Hills will continue to be internationally known as a school that is open to culturally diverse children. Pray that our students and staff will show their excitement to be challenged by international students who will bring a fresh look at life, education, and worship.

Day 8 - Single Parents

1 Peter 5:6-7: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." (ESV)

Single parents have a lot on their plates caring for the home, kids, and working. From a biblical perspective, God intends for children to grow up in a loving home with both mom and dad. It is sad that this does not always work out. Single parents can find themselves single and raising their kids on their own for a variety of reasons. We should always remember to pray for them as they balance their lives in ways that will allow them to pour time and love into their kids while still having time for themselves. Pray that God will give them a double portion of grace, energy, rest, and love. Pray that they will invite other godly influences into their lives and the lives of their kids. Pray that they would find community in a local church like North Hills. Pray that they will find support, love, and encouragement from North Hills.

Day 7 - Guardians, Grandparents, Foster Parents

2 Timothy 1:5: "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well." (ESV)

On some occasions, both mom and dad are not present in the lives of their kids. Sometimes these kids end up being raised by loving grandparents, family members who are designated guardians, or foster parents. Many times these situations are the result of some tragic circumstances they had no control over. We are grateful that these children are still able to grow up in a loving home. Let's pray for these guardians. Pray that they will love these kids like their own. Pray they will treat them with respect, and provide them with good discipline, and a life that is well balanced. This is so important as they go through their teenage years and get ready to move out of their home to start a home of their own. Pray that these guardians are godly, good, and gracious.

Day 6 - Parents

Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (ESV)

It should be no surprise that parents are the most important influence in the lives of their kids. We desire that all parents know the Lord and are actively seeking to pass on their faith to the next generation. It seems more than ever, that families are busy and often sacrifice church in order to free up some time in their lives for other more secular activities. Parents need to have fun with their kids but they need to balance this with serving in the community and local church. Parents need to stress to their kids the importance of studying, discipline, growing in Christ, setting good boundaries, valuing friends, respecting others, and being good citizens. Parents have a lot to do. Today, let's lift up parents as they do their best to raise a generation of world changers.

Day 5 - High School Students

Philippians 3:13-14: "Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (ESV)

In High school, students start to think about the future and the possibilities of who they might become. We hope that they will become leaders at the school and will be examples to those younger than them. We hope that North Hills prepares them to become leaders in their communities now and beyond high school. The high school years become the springboard to their future, be that college, the military, a trade, or the workforce. Pray that they would prepare for life beyond high school. Pray that they will gain wisdom and that they would pursue an intimate relationship with God. Pray also that they will learn how to express their faith in Christ in appropriate ways so that they will show true love and concern for their secular friends. Pray especially for the seniors, that God will confirm what life after high school might look like and how to maintain their faith in their young adult years. Unfortunately, many young people leave church right out of high school because college and work distract them from what is most important in life. Pray that our high school students will stay focused and on target to “Love God, Serve Others, and Change the World.”

Day 4 - Middle School Students

Ephesians 4:15: "Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ." (ESV)

Middle School students are somewhere between elementary school and high school. These years are seen as transition years between being children and young adults. These students are nearing their teenage years and are trying to navigate topics such as identity, responsibility, and freedom. Pray that they will find their identity in Christ and Christ alone. This is also usually the age when students come to know Christ. Pray that middle school students would continue to mature and grow in faith, hope, and love for the future. Pray that they will come to know Jesus in a meaningful way. Pray that they will learn to create an atmosphere of family among their fellow students. Pray that they will begin to find out who they are, what their gifts and talents are, and how they fit into the body of Christ and the local Church.

Day 3 - Elementary School Students

Deuteronomy 6:6-9: "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." (ESV)

Students in kindergarten through fifth grades enter 6 years of learning that will set the foundation for the rest of their lives. While an elementary school education begins to advance the core curriculum of reading, writing, arithmetic, and science, students also begin to develop personal character qualities that will establish their unique identity. At North Hills, students will learn quality traits rooted in the characters of the Bible that we pray will be the foundation of their own character. These biblical traits will overlap their education as they learn to interact in positive ways with their teachers, fellow students, and of course, their parents. Please pray that these young students will see the connection between being like Jesus and being a good student, a loyal friend, and a devoted son or daughter. Pray that they would begin to develop consistent biblical character. As we pray for the North Hills elementary school students, please also pray for the many other elementary school students in our community.

Day 2 - Preschool Children

Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (ESV)

On Day 2 of our 40 days of prayer, we want to pray for the youngest children at North Hills: our preschoolers. Preschool often serves as a service to parents who need childcare for their children while they go to work. However, North Hills Christian Preschool goes beyond “childcare” to offer an academic preschool program that prepares children for kindergarten and beyond! Children in the North Hills Christian Preschool gain a solid foundation for their education, but most importantly, they are pointed daily to Jesus. Let’s pray for our preschool children as they begin their lifelong journey of learning and that they would embrace a childlike faith in Jesus.

Day 1 - Pray for Children and Youth

Luke 18:16-17: "But Jesus called them to him, saying, 'Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.'” (ESV)

Today marks 40 days until the first day of the new school year at North Hills. For some, the idea of another school year brings anxiety. For others, it brings great joy and excitement. As we approach that first day of school on August 15, we want to begin by especially praying for the children and youth in our community. The last few years have been tough on all of us. And to be honest, we won’t know the long-term impact that COVID will have on the emotional and spiritual state of our children for many years to come. But we trust that God is in control, and we come to Him asking that He watch over our children…His children. Children and youth need love, care, as well as an education that prepares them for the future. But we acknowledge that while studies and grades are important, the most important thing that we can do for this generation is to point them toward Jesus. While we want to specifically pray for the children and youth who attend North Hills, let’s also pray for all of the children and youth in our community who attend public schools, charter schools, and those who are homeschooled. Too often we talk about children as the future, but their future begins today as they are prepared to change the world through the power of Jesus. Pray today that God will bless the children and youth of our community, and additionally that perhaps God may lead more parents to enroll their kids at North Hills.
